Home Skin Conditions Allergies & Patch Testing

Allergic contact dermatitis is common in Australia, and the most common allergens causing these allergies include cosmetics, preservatives, fragrances and Nickel.

Many patients are unaware of allergic reactions that may be causing their skin dermatitis.  Here at Oxford Dermatology we carry out Patch Testing to investigate if a substance or chemical may be causing dermatitis.

Patch testing involves applying to the skin small amounts of common chemicals (allergens) onto the skin under “patches”. These patches are kept in direct contact with the skin for the next 48 hours (usually positioned on the back).  Patch Testing is carried out in our practice every Monday with patients returning the Wednesday and Friday thereafter for our staff to assess any reactions taken place.

If you notice a flare up of your condition after using a certain product, please bring with you your products for review at the time of your consultation. This will assist our Dermatologists with your allergen testing
